"Some of the most consistently exciting ensemble theatre in Britain is currently being produced by Hands' Clwyd company. *****" The Guardian 2004
Created through the vision of Clwyd County Council and its Chief Executive Haydn Rees, Theatr Clwyd was opened in 1976. Located a mile from Mold town centre the building incorporates five performance venues: The Anthony Hopkins Theatre, Emlyn Williams Theatre, Studio 2, multi-function Clwyd Room for the community, Cinema and three art
galleries.
Following Local Government Reorganisation in Wales, the theatre faced closure on 1st April 1997. The new Flintshire County Council and its Leader, Tom Middlehurst, asked Terry Hands to formulate an artistic and business plan to avert this threat and take the theatre forward .
Subsequently Terry accepted the post of Director on 2 May 1997 and asked Tim Baker to join him as Associate.
In 1998 the theatre won the Barclays/TMA Theatre of the Year award and in 1999 was designated a Welsh National Performing Arts Company by the Arts Council of Wales. The name was changed to Clwyd Theatr Cymru to reflect the theatre's new national remit and its new Welsh identity.
³Director Terry Hands has struck a rich vein of gold with his latest production....a work that will resonate in the hearts of people all over Wales ² The Western Mail on Brassed Off 2004
Clwyd Theatr Cymru is the home of a highly acclaimed producing company of Welsh actors, which also presents much of its work on tour throughout Wales.
Clwyd Theatr Cymru's 200 seat mobile theatre is a unique and innovative contribution to professional theatre touring within Wales. The production of Brassed Off in Autumn 2004, the fifth mobile theatre tour, was made possible by a £100,000 grant from the Welsh Assembly Government and sponsorship from Lloyds TSB matched by equivalent funding from Arts & Business.
